Portal 2 - Custom Map
First Person Puzzle Platformer | PC | Portal 2 Editor | School Project | 1 weeks | 2021

Project Description

For our first Level Design class at our 2nd year at IIM, we had to make three maps in the in-game editor of Portal 2. Since I was in a group of three, we decided that each person will make a test chamber.

There was a constraint, we had to make those three puzzles centered around one item of our choice, and we chose the tractor beam. Following this idea, I made a map with the core concept of having to put a cube on a button to unlock the exit, without ever being able to touch the cube.

I also added an intro to the first map. Playing on the fact the first window lights up as you start the map, I made a pitch black first room that suddenly revealed the exit behind a glass panel. After that, it was a matter of replicating this room inside the third map, my own, and using a bug in the editor to duplicate the doors to create the illusion.

Lots of tests had to be done to see how big a map could be, how the lights worked, using lights and black walls to make something aesthetically pleasing, and getting around the constraints of the in-game editor to make the best out of this week of work.
